The Copyright and AI Counsel serves as a subject matter expert and thought leader at Creative Commons (CC). The role includes internally-facing research, analysis, and strategy development, as well as public-facing communications and education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Consulting and training
    • As a contributor to our Learning & Training team and other consulting work,
      • Present in webinars, respond to inquiries, and help develop training content designed to educate librarians, teachers, cultural heritage institutions, and others seeking to learn about CC licenses, public domain tools, and future tools stewarded by Creative Commons.
      • Advise academic institutions, research journals, cultural heritage institutions, and other stakeholders on implementation of open policy and practices including adoption of CC licenses and public domain tools.
  • Research, writing, and public speaking
    • As a contributor to our Communications team,
      • Research and analyze complex legal issues, especially relating to the intersection of copyright and AI, in order to provide briefings and summaries to be used in various communications outputs.
      • Write reports, recommendations, blog posts, and other long-form content on copyright, AI, and other issues related to digital technology and knowledge creation around the world.
      • Present on topics tied to CC’s copyright & AI approaches and strategies.
  • Community building
    • As a contributor to the Community team,
      • Lead the recultivation of community around copyright & policy experts who were previously a key part of the Creative Commons global network.
  • CC licenses and other legal tools
    • As a key member of the Legal team,
      • Create and maintain explanatory resources and documentation on the existing CC legal tools and assist in the development of new tools to support sharing in the age of AI.

Qualifications

  • Law degree from an accredited law school in the U.S. or Canada
  • Demonstrated interest and experience with artificial intelligence, copyright, and other legal issues related to digital technology and knowledge creation.
  • Demonstrated ability to explain complex topics to an audience of experts and non-experts alike; priority will be given to candidates with demonstrated exceptional writing skills

Work Environment & Location

Creative Commons is made up of a group of people passionate about open access. We have been a fully-distributed organization since 2015— we have no central office. This position is in a remote working environment. You must be located in the United States or Canada. You must have reasonable mobility for necessary global travel and high-speed broadband access. A laptop and peripherals are supplied.

Salary & Benefits

Creative Commons is a leading non-profit employer, offering competitive salaries and benefits, including health and wellness plans, annual retirement contributions, and a positive, supportive work environment. The base salary range for this position is $95,000-105,000 $ USD, commensurate with relevant skills and experience.
